Miramar Ferris Wheel

Just what is different about Miramar Entertainment Park? Like any other large, enclosed shopping mall, it houses a theatre, department store, high end shops, and a food court. Its interior is pleasant, but not outstanding. Its food court, like that of other malls, offers a variety of cuisines – Chinese, Japanese, Italian. However, the food and the interior are not why this mall is unusual. Nor is the exterior unusual. It looks like any other large urban construction. Yet there is something different about this mall. Something that makes it stand out from a distance. In fact it’s the only mall I know of with a 230 foot Ferris wheel located on its roof.

When I first spotted the wheel from Highway One, I wanted to see it up close. Whether seen by night or day, the Miramar wheel is majestic – like Taipei’s own Eiffel Tower. Yet since it’s a Ferris wheel there’s something playful about it as well. If you’d like to take a long view of Taipei while suspended well above the ground, this is the Ferris wheel for you.

A visit to Taipei 101 is another must for height lovers. This building, reminiscent of ancient pagodas, was the world’s tallest until the Burj Khalifa opened in Dubai in 2010. Taipei 101 opened on the last day of 2004, just in time to celebrate with New Years’ fireworks.

When the sky is clear, you can see far in all directions from the building’s two observatories. However, on the day I visited, Taipei 101 was wrapped in clouds.

Image of Maokong gondola

The Maokong gondola climbs to elevations where top quality Iron Guan Yin tea is produced. The gondola makes four stops — two of these offer access to the Taipei Zoo. Maokong Station is the final stop. There you can hike on a nearby trail or view the mountains while sipping tea in a comfortable teahouse.
